Meeting 9-17-20

Hello All!

This week we went over basic history of Chinese Characters and Beginner's calligraphy! If you are interested, the links are below:

Video 1: Origin of Chinese Characters

Video 2: Calligraphy Basics

Video 3: Good Pointers! (we only watched until 4:28, but the whole video is useful if you have the time)

Weekly Challenge: Take at least one character from your Chinese name or (if preferred/more applicable) 平和 (ping he 'peaceful') or 网吧 (wang ba 'internet cafe' the Chinese name of our Online Cafe), and try to write the character in calligraphy. It doesn't matter how 'perfect' it turns out, only that you are self improving :)

I know that purchasing a calligraphy kit may not sound very appealing right now so here are some possible alternatives:

-Brush Tipped Pens/ Markers

-Round Paint Brush (preferably tapered) -usually you can find them in art stores or basic brush sets-

-If using a brush any of the following mediums will work

  • water color
  • liquid ink
  • ink sticks/blocks

-For those who were in 1010 with me last Fall, you probably have the brush that came with the reusable water writing paper, those are perfect!

If you have any questions please contact me!

Of note, you can find calligraphy sets online for $15-$30

I know this week I spaced out announcing our meeting in class and I apologize for that. I would like you all to know that I plan on hosting meetings every week until the end of the semester (unless otherwise specified), and the link to those meetings should always be available via the About page here (although it should pretty much be the same week to week).

Until Next Week!
